Next week is an important week for anybody with an interest in the future of our urban centre as we begin the process of re-imagining O’Connell St in Limerick
Some time back the local authority announced that it has secured €4.1 million in European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) via the Designated Urban Centre Grants Scheme which will be used to significantly upgrade O’Connell St in the heart of Limerick city.
The re-imagining O’Connell St in Limerick project is now supported by council and brings the estimated investment to approximately €9.1 million.
According to the local authority, “This commitment to the revitalisation of O’Connell Street, the heart of the Limerick/Shannon gateway, will result in quantifiable improvements to urban mobility and the urban environment”.
In recent months the council has held a series of public consultations and the process is now moving to a stage where final designs will be agreed.
Following on from those previous series of meetings with various stakeholders and members of the public on design options, a preferred design is emerging.
Next week Limerick City and County Council is holding another round of public consultation days as part of the re-imagining O’Connell Street in Limerick project, Limerick’s premier thoroughfare.
Limerick City and County Council is now inviting feedback on the emerging preferred design before the formal stage of Public Consultation commences under the Part 8 Planning process.
The design team is interested in your opinions and suggestions on how the proposed design will help improve the public area, regenerate the urban fabric, reduce air pollution and promote noise reduction on O’Connell Street.
Feedback on the emerging preferred design will be considered in the preparation of the formal Part 8 submission for the project.
Details of the emerging preferred design will be on display in Merchant’s Quay on Tuesday 20th June 2017 from 4pm until 7.30pm.
Submissions will be accepted by post and email to the contact details below up to Friday 23rd June 2017.
Anyone who uses the city centre or anyone with an interest in the future of our city will recognise the importance of these consultations. We have a unique opportunity as citizens to input into the decision making process.
The work that will be done on this important city centre street will not just impact the lives of Limerick people today. The decisions we make today will fundamentally shape how we think about and use our urban centre into the future.
In re-imagining O’Connell St in Limerick, the Council are offering an opportunity for all of us to have our say next week. It is our duty as citizens to input. If we don’t we must forever hold our peace.
