The organisers of a new Limerick initiative called “Every Child is Your Child” have announced details of an upcoming extravaganza in Thomond Park to raise funds for parents who are living in direct provision as they await approval of their refugee status.
The event will take place on Friday April 28th, and consists of a dinner evening with entertainment from Voice of Ireland star David Idioh, music acts ROAN and Elikya. It is supported by a range of business, sporting and other organisations including the University of Limerick’s Kemmy Business School, Chez Le Fab cafe and Doras Luimni.
Speaking at the launch in UL Sports Arena on Tuesday 21st March, one of the organisers, Finn Lannon, said “This promises to be a fun evening with a difference. It’s not every day that people get a chance to enjoy an evening of music and good food at Thomond Park for just €30 while contributing to a deserving cause at the same time.”
“The idea behind the event is to raise awareness about the direct provision system and what it means to be an asylum seeker in Ireland” said another of the organisers Donnah Vuma, who is herself living in direct provision.
“We want people to come along to enjoy themselves in Thomond Park on April 28th” added Donnah. “But we’re also asking the public and businesses to donate towards the purchase of tickets for people in direct provision. With an allowance of only €19.10 a week, and not being allowed to work, they cannot normally afford nights out like this.”
Chez le Fab owner and event sponsor Lesley Anne Liddane said she loves how Every Child is Your Child is bringing people together for a common purpose. “It is about empowering people and encouraging harmony and interdependence among parents from different nationalities residing in Ireland, focusing on those living in direct provision. And that’s something I definitely support.”
Munster rugby star Duncan Casey and supporter of Every Child is Your Child “I’m looking forward to the event which promises to be a fun night for a worthy cause.”
Tickets for the “Every Child is Your Child” night at Thomond Park are on sale for €30 from Doras Luimni, Sadliers Fish Shop, Chez le Fab and Café Rose in Limerick, where donations can also be made.
There is an option to purchase on behalf of a person in direct provision:
