Culinary Carnival with Culture and Chips

5 min read
loves chips. Everybody loves culture. Quirky is cool. Carnivals are fun. Why
not bring them all together in a veritable cornucopia of culinary, cultural
chip-based carnival?!
has decided to do just that and has announced details of the ‘Culture &
Chips’ food carnival taking place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. An
authentic specially transported 1920’s Spiegeltent will be erected in Arthur’s
Quay Park for the duration of what promises to be one of the best weekends of
the year.
the past number of weeks I have been part of a small team which has created the
concept of ‘Culture & Chips- a quirky food carnival celebrating Limerick at
its best’.  As part of Limerick National City of Culture 2014 we hope to
cook up something special for the June Bank Holiday weekend, a weekend that has
tended to be neglected in recent years.  We hope to have created a new
event for city’s calendar that leaves a legacy for Limerick city going forward.
presence of the Spiegeltent in the city is something we hope will generate keen
interest. It is something that hasn’t been done in the city to date. Everything
about what we are creating will focus on three key words – ‘quirky’, ‘food’ and
for the weekend are events such as Jack L, the Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow, a
locally produced cabaret, children’s events and food trails. A very special
culinary Spiegeltent banquet will see chef Paul Williams of Canteen serve up a
menu of locally sourced produce from the region featuring matching wines and
craft beers.
are creating what we believe to be the first ever World Chip Championships
where we will be inviting chefs and foodies from Limerick and beyond to give us
their take on the humble chip. If Galway can create an oyster opening champion
then why can’t Limerick  go one better by creating the first World Chip
Culture & Chips carnival will not be alone in Limerick city on the June
Bank Holiday weekend. We also play host to the Irish Chamber Orchestra are
presenting Carmen in the Milk Market on Thursday and Friday; TomCat Street
Festival takes place on the streets and in the hostelries of Thomas Street and
Catherine Street; the RugbyLAD Sevens Festival is taking place at LIT Sports
Grounds; plus there will be a host of other events, food trails and activities
to enjoy.
are striving to make Culture & Chips a unique event not just in Limerick
but nationally and further afield. We want as many businesses as possible in
Limerick to play their part in making this new culinary carnival a success in
the city. We are putting in hours of volunteer time to strive to get this
right. We invite everyone to play their part too. Get involved and let’s make
Limerick the place to be this June Bank Holiday Weekend.
